The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President Oh Sang-rok) is expanding the network of global science and technology talent it has cultivated over the past 25 years into a hub for KIST’s future international cooperation.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the KIST School-which operates with the goal of fostering future global leaders in science and technology-KIST hosted the “KIST School Homecoming Day,” an event for international alumni, on Thursday, July 2, at the KIST headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The event was attended by approximately 150 guests, including alumni from 15 countries and their families, as well as key dignitaries such as the Chairman of the National Science and Technology Council (NST), the President of the University of Science and Technology (UST), and diplomatic envoys to South Korea, who gathered to discuss strategies for global science and technology cooperation and talent development.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, KIST has presented a vision under the slogan “RE:TURN to YOU: Back to the People and the Future,” pledging to give back to the public and future generations the achievements that contributed to national development in its early years. This event served as an opportunity to expand this vision to the global stage. KIST officially announced its strategic direction to utilize KIST School alumni-who are serving as key researchers at universities, research institutions, government agencies, and in industry around the world-as pivotal hubs for international joint research, talent exchange, and the expansion of global research networks.

The event kicked off with a special lecture by Lee Sedol, a special professor at UNIST, titled “In the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Rediscovering the Human Path.” It was organized with the aim of exploring ways to rediscover human values through science and technology in the age of AI.

This was followed by a ceremony to announce KIST School’s vision for the next 25 years. The vision statement, “Empowering Global Talent, Inspiring Inclusive Innovation,” which was selected through a prior call for submissions from alumni, outlines three key initiatives: ▲ cultivating global talent; ▲ pursuing research excellence with global impact; and ▲ strengthening international partnerships and networks.

At the KIST School Talent Forum, three alumni selected for joint research projects and experts in international cooperation engaged in an in-depth panel discussion on strategies for attracting and nurturing future global talent, as well as ways to establish a collaborative model that enables alumni to play key roles in their home countries’ R&D ecosystems while continuing joint research with KIST.

In addition, the “KIST Alumni Award,” established for the first time to honor outstanding achievements by alumni, was presented to Dr. Hoang Long Du of Monash University in Australia in the Research Achievement category for publishing numerous papers in world-renowned academic journals such as Nature, and and in the School Service category, Dr. Rika Tri Yunarti of the University of Indonesia was selected for her contributions to the development of the KIST School through recruiting students from her home country and fostering collaborative research.

President Oh Sang-rok stated, “Over the past 25 years, KIST School has served as a vital bridge connecting outstanding science and technology talent from around the world with KIST, and now is the time to develop this alumni network into a core foundation for expanding KIST’s global collaboration,” adding, “As KIST marks its 60th anniversary, I hope that KIST School alumni will serve as hubs of cooperation linking research institutions in their respective countries with KIST, thereby further promoting international joint research, talent exchange, and research aimed at solving global problems,” he said.

KIST School is a master’s and doctoral program in science and engineering under the University of Science and Technology (UST), and has been cultivating global science and technology talent for the past 25 years. Starting with this event, KIST plans to hold an alumni homecoming day every three years to further strengthen its international collaborative research network centered on KIST School alumni.
